An air quality alert has been issued for the Windsor-Essex area due to elevated pollution levels from “stagnant” weather conditions.

Environment Canada released a yellow warning, signaling hazardous weather that could affect health, for Windsor, Essex, and Leamington on Sunday.

“High levels of air pollution have developed,” the agency said.

“Light winds and stagnating weather conditions have resulted in increasing levels of fine particles and nitrogen dioxide.”

As a result, high risk AQHI values may continue into Monday morning.

Environment Canada advises that when air pollution levels are high, everyone should limit their time outdoors and consider postponing outdoor sports, activities, and events.

Mild symptoms can include nose and throat irritation, headaches or a slight cough. More serious but less common symptoms might involve wheezing, chest pains or severe coughing.

The groups more likely to be affected by outdoor air pollution include individuals aged 65 and older, pregnant individuals, infants and young children, those with pre-existing illnesses or chronic health issues, as well as people who work outside.

If you’re indoors, it’s recommended to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and use a good quality air filter in your ventilation system or a certified portable air cleaner.
