Family Day 2026: What’s Open and Closed in Durham

Family Day 2026: What’s Open and Closed in Durham

Family Day takes place on Monday, Feb. 17 in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Clarington and throughout Durham Region. While it’s not a national holiday, Ontario recognizes it as one.

There are still many activities available, especially geared towards families.

Events for Family Day include Winterfest in Ajax; Clarington’s Family Day – featuring free fun all day at Courtice Community Complex, Diane Hamre Recreation Centre and South Courtice Arena. Enjoy public swimming, outdoor skating, fitness classes, drop-in basketball and racquet sports, youth shinny and ‘sportball,’ among other options; Family Day at the Oshawa Museum and the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa; plus a range of free activities like face painting, skating and swimming at Iroquois Park Sports Centre and Brooklin Community Centre from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. during Whitby’s Family Day.

What’s Open:

Most Shoppers Drug Mart locations Most restaurants that usually operate on Mondays will be open but call ahead just to confirm. Canada Post (mail pick-up and delivery won’t change because of the holiday) Federal government offices (most services can be accessed online; offices are open by appointment only) Most recreation centres Some cannabis shops will be open but it’s best to call ahead to check A few breweries will be open too but again call your favorites first

Closed:

Major shopping centers like Pickering Town Centre and Oshawa Centre will be closed, although restaurants with outdoor entrances might still operate. Most major grocery stores LCBO Beer Store Banks City Halls and provincial government buildings Most libraries

Transit

Durham Region Transit will follow a weekend schedule. GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Garbage:
