Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking into the death of an inmate at Millhaven Institution, located west of Kingston, after a fight with other inmates.
The inmate has been identified as 28-year-old Darian Daignault, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead two days later.
The Correctional Service of Canada confirmed in a separate statement that Daignault died in the hospital from injuries sustained during the altercation and mentioned that no staff members were hurt during the incident.
Authorities stated that a post-mortem examination will be carried out to find out what caused his death.
The OPP-led Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. Investigators are collaborating with the Office of the Chief Coroner, Forensic Pathology Service, and Correctional Service Canada, while also receiving support from OPP forensic identification services.
According to Correctional Service Canada, Daignault had been serving a sentence of 10 years, two months and 26 days since July 11, 2019. They did not reveal details about what led to his conviction.
The agency noted that Daignault’s next of kin has been informed and will review all circumstances related to this incident as they do for every inmate death.
