What’s Open and Closed on Family Day in Hamilton and Niagara

What’s Open and Closed on Family Day in Hamilton and Niagara

Many businesses and services might be closed on Monday as Family Day is a public holiday in Ontario.

Here’s a rundown of what will be open and closed in the Hamilton and Niagara regions for February 16, 2026.

CLOSED

Banks and government offices; Garbage, green bin, recycling bins, and bulk waste collection will take place one day later for the rest of the week. All LCBO and Beer Store locations; The City of Hamilton Animal Services office counter and shelter is closed; All branches of the Hamilton Public Library are closed, which includes no Bookmobile services or Extended Access/Study Hall services; Most grocery stores and shopping malls will not be open.

OPEN

Canada Post states that mail collection and deliveries will still happen on Monday; There aren’t many major tourist spots open except Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada; St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre will welcome visitors; The Tropical Greenhouse at Gage Park will be available to the public; Family Day Fun Fest at Chippawa, Community Centre, Stamford Centre, and Victoria Avenue Libraries; Several museums are open with Family Day programming in Hamilton; Some recreation centres and arenas will operate on a Family Day schedule.

Transit Schedules:

GO Transit buses and trains will run on a Saturday schedule; Hamilton Street Railway will follow a Sunday schedule, with the last bus leaving downtown around midnight without HSR Route 12 Wentworth or 42 Mohawk East service; My Ride in Waterdown and Trans-Cab will operate under a Sunday schedule; Burlington Transit will function on a holiday timetable, but customer service along with specialized dispatch services will be closed.
