Families who love fishing can take advantage of a free opportunity this weekend.
From Saturday to Monday, it’s the first free fishing weekend of 2026 in Ontario. Anglers can fish without needing to purchase a licence or Outdoors Card beforehand.
“Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario,” said Mike Harris, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources. “Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time ice fishing, take advantage of this opportunity to get out and make lasting memories with friends and family.”
If you’re planning to go out on the ice to fish, please prioritize safety. Check local conditions with hut operators and other anglers before heading out. Clear blue ice is usually the strongest, while white or honeycombed ice is much weaker. Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return, and dress warmly for comfort and safety.
Catch and possession limits still apply, as do restrictions in sanctuaries and conservation areas according to provincial fishing regulations.
Anyone taking part in a free fishing weekend must have a government-issued ID showing their name and date of birth.
Ontario will also have more free fishing weekends during Mother’s Day weekend in May, Father’s Day weekend in June, and Family Fishing Week from June 27 to July 5.
