Families who love fishing can enjoy it for free this weekend.
From Saturday to Monday, Ontario is hosting its first free fishing weekend of 2026. Anglers can fish without needing to buy a licence or an Outdoors Card.
“Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario,” said Mike Harris, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources. “Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time ice fishing, take advantage of this opportunity to get out and make lasting memories with friends and family.”
If you’re planning to head out on the ice to fish, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Be sure to check the conditions with local hut operators and fellow anglers before you go. Clear blue ice is generally the strongest, while white or honeycombed ice is much weaker. Always inform someone about your plans and when you expect to return, and dress warmly for comfort and safety.
Catch limits still apply, as do restrictions in sanctuaries and conservation areas according to provincial fishing regulations.
Anyone taking part in a free fishing weekend needs to carry a government-issued ID that includes their name and date of birth.
Ontario will also have free fishing weekends for Mother’s Day in May, Father’s Day in June, and Family Fishing Week from June 27 to July 5.
