GREENSTONE, ON – Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed that a serious incident on Highway 11 has resulted in a fatality.

According to Greenstone OPP, officers were called to the scene at around 5:30 p. m. (EST) on Thursday, February 12, 2026, regarding a collision close to Kenogamisis Dam Road. One individual was declared dead at the scene, and two others were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Major road closures affecting travel in Northwestern Ontario

As per the latest updates, Highway 11 is currently shut between Nipigon and Hearst, and Highway 631 is also closed from Hornepayne to Highway 11. Drivers are advised to steer clear of this area and expect significant delays.

Ontario 511 is reporting an all-lanes-closed incident on Highway 11 in the Longlac-Geraldton region, indicating broader disruptions along this route.

Impact on Thunder Bay-area drivers and freight

For those traveling in the Thunder Bay District and surrounding areas, the Nipigon-Hearst segment is crucial for:

Commercial transport and supply operations along Highway 11

Access to Greenstone communities like Geraldton and Longlac

North-south connections via Highway 631, which is also closed

Travelers should postpone their trips if possible, look into alternative routes (where available), and ensure they have necessary winter supplies if already on their way.

Stay updated before heading out

The timeline for reopening may change quickly as investigations and cleanup efforts proceed. For up-to-date closure information, motorists should check Ontario 511 and follow guidance from emergency personnel present at the scene.

Summary: Fatal crash near Geraldton closes Hwy 11 Nipigon-Hearst; Hwy 631 shut. Avoid travel. Check 511.
