An Ontario city has decided to take down all plaques and signs that connect Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to its downtown area after the British Royal Family removed his titles.

Councillors in Mississauga have followed King Charles III’s example by eliminating long-standing links to former Prince Andrew from city hall and a nearby street.

At the end of October, Buckingham Palace announced it would officially strip Andrew of his title as prince due to his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

This scandal-ridden royal also lost the title “his royal highness” after the king issued a Letters Patent, which is an old type of document used by monarchs to give or revoke titles.

The king had previously taken away the Duke of York title from him.

A motion brought forward by Mississauga Ward 4 Coun. and Deputy Mayor John Kovac officially cut ties between Duke of York Boulevard and Andrew, though it didn’t rename the road.

Coun. Alvin Tedjo initially suggested renaming Duke of York Boulevard completely but couldn’t gain support from his colleagues for that more expensive option.

Back in 1987, Andrew visited Mississauga for the opening of the city’s Civic Centre. Duke of York Boulevard was named after him at that time, along with a plaque placed at city hall to commemorate his visit.

The visit from royalty was highly anticipated back then. The Mississauga News covered events like a Sarah Ferguson lookalike competition and reported about 70,000 attendees.

However, Andrew’s reputation has significantly declined since 1987, leading to increasing pressure on the Royal Family to distance themselves from him.

This demand grew stronger following new information about his friendship with Epstein and renewed focus on sexual abuse claims made by one of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre; her posthumous memoir came out last month.

Andrew is also required to vacate Royal Lodge, where he has lived near Windsor Castle for over 20 years.

The council’s motion removes those plaques and establishes that the road honors Canada’s history as a constitutional monarchy rather than serving as a tribute to Andrew.

“While we’ve kept the name of the boulevard to avoid significant inconvenience and cost for residents, partners, and businesses who reside on Duke of York Boulevard, we’ve removed all associations with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,” Mayor Carolyn Parrish wrote in a statement.

“As a Council, we’re sending a strong message that we stand against gender-based violence and are dedicated to creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for survivors.”
