1948-2026
With heavy hearts, the family shares the news of their beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and niece, Lina Mayer, who passed away on February 10, 2026. She left us peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Lina was born on September 5, 1948, in Castelli Teramo, Italy. In 1953, she and her family moved to Canada and made their home in Thunder Bay, where she lived for the rest of her life.
In 1966, she married Robert, the love of her life. Together they raised five children. Lina devoted herself to her family during their early years. When they got older, she joined the workforce starting at a local drive-in theatre. Later on, she spent 25 years working in various long-term care homes with the City of Thunder Bay before retiring in 2010.
A committed Catholic, Lina volunteered generously at Corpus Christi Church. Family gatherings were especially important to her-whether traveling across Canada or enjoying Sunday dinners together.
Her homemade ravioli, lasagna, gnocchi, spaghetti sauce and meat pies became family favorites that will be cherished for years ahead. She also loved going to the casino with her sister Julie and playing Hagi TV bingo.
As her grandchildren grew up, one of her greatest joys was reading them “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch and singing its familiar words-a memory they’ll always keep close to their hearts.
Lina is lovingly survived by her children: Rochelle (Shaune), Roberta, Laurie Coates (John), Michael and Paul (Amy); her sister Julie (Ralph); her aunt Ida; as well as grandchildren Jessica, Emily, Nicole (Alec), Chantel (Braidyn), Brandon (Karen) and Christopher; plus great-grandchildren Conor and Sonny. She also leaves behind many cousins along with nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband Robert (2014); and brother Bruno (2025).
The family extends heartfelt thanks to The Walford Thunder Bay staff for their wonderful care and support shown to Lina during her time there. Your kindness meant so much to both her and our family.
We’re also deeply grateful to the dedicated team at the Outpatient Hemodialysis Department at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for seven years of compassionate care. The kindness you showed Lina over these years will always be remembered with appreciation.
A special thank you goes out to everyone in unit 2C for your warmth and gentle care during this difficult time. The compassion that Lina received from all brought comfort not only to her but also reassurance for our family.
A Mass along with a Celebration of Life will take place with interment afterward at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Details will follow soon.
If you wish to honor Lina’s memory instead of sending flowers, donations can be made to the Renal Hemodialysis Fund at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation in memory of Lina Mayer.
You’ll always be missed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre located at 575 Central Avenue in Thunder Bay.
