1947 – 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our dear husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Walter James Boutilier on January 31, 2026. Known as “Jim” to those close to him, he was born on August 1, 1947 and was cherished by everyone who crossed his path. His charisma shone through in every interaction; he was always filled with love, laughter, and countless stories to tell. Jim had a heart of gold and could brighten anyone’s day.
A highlight of his life was meeting his wonderful wife Eva. Their love story is one for the ages. Jim proudly referred to Eva as “The One.” They spent many happy years traveling to visit family and friends while creating unforgettable memories together. They were often seen walking hand in hand with a special sparkle in their eyes.
Throughout his rich life, he played a key role in raising 13 amazing children who brought him immense pride: Nancy (Gord), Tammy (Tyler), Susie (Gino), Roger (Sheila), Jay (Robin), Mike (Shari), Richard (Yvonne), David (Karen), Jason (Patricia), Kyle, Garret, Alison (Gavin), Stephanie (Ryan). He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who will carry on his spirit.
Every phase of Jim’s life felt like an adventure. Starting from a young age at just 13 years old out of necessity led him to develop a strong work ethic. Over the course of his diverse career journey spanning various jobs-from working at a donut shop in Toronto to candling eggs in the Prairies; being a ranch hand out West; mining in the Yukon; and finally moving into trucking-he met many people along the way. He even introduced Kenworth Truck Sales to Thunder Bay during a grand opening event held in the late ’90s at Twincity Crossroads and Arthur Street which spanned three days. His impact on Thunder Bay’s trucking industry remains memorable as he continuously lent a helping hand while pursuing new opportunities.
Despite facing health challenges later in life, Jim’s determination helped him overcome all medical odds. We often joked that Jim had lived through 27 lives but this one proved unbeatable.
Jim’s unwavering commitment to his family provided him with strength until the very end. His daily greeting was always “Have I told you today I/We love you?” which prompted us to respond with “We love you more!” He will be missed deeply by all who knew him-a man adored by many and never forgotten!
He is survived by his devoted wife Eva along with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren (“Grandpa we will miss your Manitoba visits”), several siblings as well as Eva’s extended family.
He was predeceased by his parents along with two siblings and numerous other relatives.
A Celebration of Life for Jim will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at the Slovak Legion Solarium from 1pm – 4pm.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chan and Dr. Sellick along with the medical staff from the Cancer Centre, Emergency Department and Unit 2A for their compassionate care over the years.
