Richard Uren, known affectionately as Dick or RUJ, peacefully passed away at Mariposa Hospice House in Orillia on February 5, 2026. He was a man of strong integrity, wisdom, and humor. Born in London, Ontario on December 29, 1941, he was a dedicated son to the late Lillian Elliot Johnston (Uren) and Dr. William Sanders Johnston (the Colonel). He was the beloved husband of Wendy (Wilkins) for fifty-eight years and a proud father to Andrew Johnston, Beth Kudar (Tyler), and Mary Johnston (John Mac Donald). He adored his grandchildren Calvin, Claire, and Henry. He was also a cherished brother to Ian Johnston (Marilyn) and the late Penny Johnston. Many nieces and nephews loved him as their dear uncle. His absence will be deeply felt by all.

Growing up in London, Ontario, Richard attended the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Medicine where he graduated in 1969 before completing his Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mc Master University in 1974. After relocating to Orillia with his young family that same year, he became a respected obstetrician and gynecologist for forty-five years at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. There he distinguished himself as both a physician and community leader by implementing perinatal rounds, helping to set up a fertility clinic, and creating standardized order sets that are now used for hospital procedures throughout Canada. His influence extended beyond local borders; he served on the council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as being the founding chair of the Ontario Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The Ontario Medical Association recognized his exceptional service with a Lifetime Membership.

With an ever-present sense of community spirit and curiosity about life coupled with a strong sense of justice, Richard co-founded numerous initiatives including Take a Vet to Dinner event, annual fundraising dinners for the Orillia Museum of Art and History, Mariposans for Refugees, and Save Our Soldiers (SOS). He actively participated in the Orillia Amnesty International Group for many years while supporting Couchiching Conservancy efforts. Additionally, he served on the board for Leacock Medal for Humour. For over five decades he remained an active member at St. Paul’s United Church in Orillia alongside Wendy as Co-Chairs of its Board. Richard held special places close to his heart like Kincardine-his spiritual home-as well as Temagami and Georgian Bay.

While people admired him for what he achieved professionally, it’s his kind-heartedness that truly stood out. Everything he did radiated grace along with compassion.

Richard always thought about those who might need a card or note or just someone checking in on them; not once did he forget anyone’s birthday.

A proud resident of Orillia as well as Canadian citizen; Richard earned recognition such as receiving the Order of Orillia back in 2002 followed by being named Citizen Of The Year In 2007; most recently receiving Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal back In 2013! Just last October-October 2025-he had been inducted into Orillia’s Hall Of Fame.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mariposa House Hospice staff especially Dr. Sochaniwskyj & Cayley Winter who provided extraordinary care during this time! A Celebration Of Life event will take place at St. Paul’s United Church Saturday March28th starting11a. m.; if desired donations can be made instead-in lieu flowers-to either Mariposa House Hospice/St. Paul’s United Church/or Amnesty International-with contributions received via Carson Funeral Homes – L. Doolittle Chapel located at54Coldwater St. EOrillia(705)326-3595.
