BARRIE, ONT. – The Ontario government is speeding up another transmission line project.

The Barrie to Sudbury transmission line has been marked as a key project, with Hydro One selected to build and develop the new single-circuit 500-kilovolt line that will stretch about 290 kilometres from the Essa Transformer Station near Barrie to the Hanmer Transformer Station in Sudbury.

This line is expected to provide enough capacity to send up to 1,500 MW north and 1,000 MW south, according to a release.

The Independent Electricity System Operator has suggested a two-phase plan:

Phase one involves a single-circuit 500-kilovolt transmission line running 290 kilometres from Barrie to Sudbury, which is projected to be operational by 2032. Phase two includes early development for a second single-circuit 500-kilovolt line so that the project can proceed quickly when additional transmission capacity between northern and southern Ontario becomes necessary, as noted in the release.

The Barrie to Sudbury line will generate over 9,000 jobs and is set to offer substantial partnership and engagement opportunities for Indigenous communities.

First Nations will also have access to Hydro One’s First Nations Equity Partnership Model, allowing First Nation leaders a role in decision-making along with 50 percent ownership of the line.

This announcement follows a provincial update from late January where Hydro One was chosen to build the Greenstone Transmission Line.
