Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a homicide in Simcoe, which has led them to find human remains in nearby Haldimand County, according to police reports.

Norfolk County OPP reported that the remains were discovered around 6 p. m. on Thursday in a wooded area off Hwy. 6, just south of Stirling Street and beyond the western boundary of Caledonia.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Friday to establish both identity and cause of death; however, police believe these remains are connected to an ongoing investigation in Simcoe where a man was charged with his mother’s murder.

On October 5 at approximately 10:30 a. m., provincial police responded to a 9-1-1 call from a residence on Head Street South, leading them to discover the body of a 71-year-old woman.

On October 10, authorities announced that officers had searched a home on Stanley Street in Simcoe while expressing concern for another individual, Robert Sykes, aged 49, from Simcoe.

Sykes was missing and was last seen on Head Street South on October 4, as per their statement.

The deceased was later identified as Barbara Morgan from Simcoe, with the post-mortem confirming her death was due to homicide.

Morgan’s son, who is also from Simcoe and is 45 years old, was arrested on October 10 and charged with second-degree murder concerning her death.

The accused appeared in court on Friday and will return again on October 21.

In an update shared Thursday, police indicated that the remains might have been placed there sometime between 10:30 p. m. and midnight on October 5-the same day Morgan’s body was found.

Authorities are encouraging residents or anyone who may have been nearby during that time frame to contact them if they noticed anything unusual or have dash cam or surveillance footage that could help the investigation.

“Residents in the area can expect to see a police presence as the investigation continues,” police said.
