The journey home is now finished for a provincial police officer who tragically lost his life earlier this week in a motorcycle accident while on duty in Cobourg.

On Thursday, numerous officers from various OPP units stood along the street outside of the Centre of Forensic Sciences in North York. Members from the mounted unit and motorcycle unit, along with the ceremonial honour guard, escorted him to Oshawa ahead of his funeral.

Throughout the route, police officers, first responders, and community members gathered on several overpasses of the highway.

Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, 33, passed away Monday following a single-vehicle crash while riding a police motorcycle on Highway 401 near Burnham Street North in Cobourg. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The details surrounding the crash are still under investigation.

Malcolm joined the OPP in 2020 and dedicated his entire career to the Northumberland detachment. He was part of the OPP’s Golden Helmets – an elite precision motorcycle riding team that showcased their skills at public events and functions.

Additionally, Malcolm served as an auxiliary member of the Toronto Police Service and worked as a combat engineer with the Canadian Armed Forces. As a mark of respect, one of RCAF’s Search and Rescue helicopters flew over during the procession.

Tributes have been pouring in from all across Ontario. OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique stated that they are “grieving this tremendous loss,” while Premier Doug Ford extended condolences to Malcolm’s family and colleagues.

The OPP expressed appreciation for the “compassion and support” shown by first responders and community members during what they called an extremely challenging week for their service.

A book of condolences can be found online at opp. ca/news, where members of the public are invited to leave messages for Malcolm’s family and colleagues. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.
