The October edition of Pumpkinfest, featuring the “Best of Both Worlds” hybrid event that combined in-person and virtual elements, won an Achievement Award, while Connie Barker was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award. These honors were announced during a recent virtual FEO conference.

Barker was among eight individuals recognized with Volunteer awards by FEO. A news release from Pumpkinfest quotes FEO as stating that successfully organizing and executing some of the top festivals and events takes more than just great ideas and teamwork.
“It takes rolling up your sleeves, digging deep into the community for support, and rounding up volunteers to make it a success,” the April 11 release noted.

Connie Barker was celebrated for her long-term commitment to Port Elgin Pumpkinfest.

The release highlighted that Barker’s involvement began at the very first Port Elgin Pumpkinfest 35 years ago, and since then she has been essential to its growth and success.

Connie is known for saying “Why not?” instead of “We can’t.” From creative ideas like underwater pumpkin carving to kids’ pajama parties and Sunday pet shows – Connie helps bring these concepts to life with great success while always being supportive.

She isn’t just a “weekend warrior”; she attends all planning and logistical meetings where her insights are invaluable. Her extensive history allows her to provide unique perspectives on both past experiences and future directions for the festival.
Throughout her time with this event she has taken on nearly every role or committee lead available. From secretary to vendor director to handling logistics for weigh-offs – she’s done it all with a smile.
She’s one of those volunteers who doesn’t need guidance; she jumps right in wherever needed – whether it’s picking up litter or addressing vendor concerns, she’s got it covered.

Connie also maintains fantastic relationships with all volunteers and actively recruits throughout the year! She has brought on students as volunteers who later became chairpersons and even presidents. Over her 35 years at Pumpkinfest, Connie has mentored every staff member who joined us and is always quick to help when they need support.
Her family often joins in too over weekends – whether it’s delivering meals or helping set up fencing, the Barker Family is there supporting us.

We’re proud to have such an enthusiastic volunteer like Connie on our team and look forward to continuing our collaboration with her.

The theme for this year’s FEO Conference was “ENERGIZE,” focusing on key phrases like RECONNECT. REIMAGINE. REFOCUS. Every speaker session provided opportunities for networking aimed at revitalizing the festival industry post-pandemic while using lessons learned over recent years to enhance user experiences and streamline operations ensuring safe events moving forward.

Pumpkinfest officials also extended congratulations to Owen Sound recognizing its Harbour Nights along with Music at the Market events.
