Prime Minister Mark Carney made a quick stop in Kitchener on Friday to enjoy some festivities.

Carney was in southern Ontario that day and, in the afternoon, visited the Schwaben Club in Breslau, just outside of Kitchener, to take part in Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest.

He used a wooden mallet to tap a keg at the fest hall and then enjoyed a mug of beer while chatting with local politicians.

It was a short visit between his morning event in Niagara and an evening celebration for Diwali in Brampton.

K-W Oktoberfest is recognized as the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside Munich, Germany.

K-W Oktoberfest has welcomed prime ministers before. In 2016, Justin Trudeau attended the opening ceremonies and tapped the keg. He also showed up in 2023 but didn’t tap the keg that year.

A year earlier in 2015, Stephen Harper attended the K-W Oktoberfest parade but wasn’t able to participate because there was a federal election happening at that time.

This year, Canadian musician Steven Page tapped the keg. Former CFL player Michael Pinball Clemons served as parade marshal.
