Investigators and excavators are working to “slowly demolish and pull apart” a home that was devastated by fire, as they search for three individuals who are still unaccounted for after a blaze that has already claimed two lives and left four others seriously injured.
Officials in Peel Region reported that multiple 911 calls alerted them to a large house fire in Brampton shortly after 2 a. m., with some residents evacuating on their own and others escaping to the roof.
In the early hours of Thursday, first responders confirmed that the fire erupted near Mc Laughlin and Remembrance roads in a residence housing a multi-generational family along with a basement unit.
They estimated that 11 people lived in the unit. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while four, including one child, were taken to hospital in critical condition. Three more individuals, possibly including another child, were still considered missing.
Brampton Fire Chief Andy Glynn stated that the fire started at a home on Banas Way around 2:30 a. m.

Glynn mentioned that when firefighters arrived on site, they encountered heavy flames breaking through the roof along with structural collapse within the house, which hindered their access to certain areas of the structure.

The mayor pointed out that the homeowner was an “absentee landlord” currently out of the country for an extended time. He noted that this landlord had submitted a request for permission to build another unit.

The mayor explained there had been “a number” of inspections conducted by city officials resulting in orders issued against this property mandating changes be made by its owner.
Brampton’s director of bylaw indicated his team was actively enforcing these orders and collaborating with the landlord regarding their secondary unit when this unfortunate fire occurred.

Glynn shared that both The Office of The Fire Marshal alongside excavators have been called upon for demolition work so new searches can begin.
The cause behind this incident remains unknown. Authorities mentioned it’s too soon to determine whether or not it is suspicious; additionally noting flames spread towards neighboring homes.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to family members friends as well as everyone involved within our community. This situation is indeed quite unfortunate this morning,” Glynn stated.
