As southern Ontario goes through the peak of winter, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding everyone about the dangers that come with snowmobiling.
The Ontario Snowmobile Safety Week runs from February 9 to February 16, and the OPP encourages snowmobile fans to refresh their knowledge of safe riding practices.
The OPP reports that 145 snowmobilers lost their lives in areas patrolled by them between the winter seasons of 2014-2015 and 2023-2024. A tragic incident involving a snowmobiler occurred northwest of Chesley late Thursday night.
Some tips for snowmobilers shared by the OPP include sticking to marked trails, following speed limits, wearing safety gear, and planning your route before heading out.
Ciliska emphasized that traveling on frozen waterways comes with its own set of risks.
“Riders are reminded that frozen lakes and rivers carry an inherent degree of uncertainty about how safe they are, and the only way to ensure one’s safety is to avoid frozen waterways altogether,” said Ciliska.
