Peterborough County OPP report that officers saved a driver after her vehicle crashed into Rice Lake early Tuesday morning. Police stated that around 12:30 a. m., a witness saw a speeding SUV veer off Wood Duck Drive, located east of Bailieboro, and plunge into the lake. No one was spotted leaving the vehicle. Three OPP officers arrived quickly and found a small boat nearby. They paddled out to the submerged car, using the headlights shining through the water as their guide. They entered the water and successfully rescued the driver from inside the vehicle. The 45-year-old woman from Port Elgin, Ont., was brought to shore where paramedics took her to a local hospital. She was later transferred to a trauma center in Toronto due to life-threatening injuries. Firefighters subsequently worked on removing the vehicle from the lake. The investigation into what caused the crash is still ongoing.
