Steven Cecil Roberts (1952-2026) passed away on January 22, 2026. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario to Cecil and Joan Roberts (nee Newton). Steve started his culinary journey and youthful experiences at the family business, Roberts’ Restaurant. Eventually, he settled in Thunder Bay. His partner in fun, Barb, affectionately called him “Toad.” To his friends at Paterson Court, he was a playful spirit and a talented pizza chef. Cooking brought him joy; he loved sharing his dishes and making people laugh. Those who were close to Steve enjoyed his creative writing and candle making talents as well as receiving early morning texts filled with photos of what he was cooking that day. Steve took the bus nearly every day-not just for transportation but to stay connected with life beyond Paterson. He had a knack for striking up conversations effortlessly and always had stories to share or help to offer. Everyone mattered to him. Even though he faced some challenges towards the end of his life, Steve appreciated each day like it was a special gift. He tackled every unexpected situation with humor, kindness, and a collection of kitchen gadgets that seemed endless. Steve is survived by his sons Colin (Val) and Graeme (Michelle); grandchildren Ben, Lola, John and Mae; his wonderful former partner Julie; siblings Susan, Linda, Wendy and Wayne; along with his best friend Barb.
To quote “The Grateful Dead” (from Truckin’):
Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it’s been.
Not long enough Steve. You are so loved and will be missed greatly. We believe you’ve already created your dream kitchen up there. Enjoy!
