Oxford County Man Faces More Charges Over Cemetery Thefts

Norfolk OPP have brought additional charges against an Oxford County man linked to several thefts from local cemeteries.

An officer noticed a vehicle leaving Waterford Greenwood Cemetery on Thompson Road East around 10:30 a. m. on Tuesday, which is about 10 kilometres north of Simcoe, Norfolk OPP stated. A 39-year-old man from Oxford County was subsequently located and arrested on Thompson Road West, police reported.

The suspect was initially charged with mischief, possession of property obtained through crime under $5,000, and theft under $5,000.

The police searched the vehicle on Wednesday and found items including an urn containing human remains. Investigators believe that stolen cemetery items were being sold for scrap metal.

The Oxford County man now faces additional charges for indignity to a dead body as well as trafficking in stolen goods over $5,000 (which includes possession with intent to traffic) and possession of property obtained through crime over $5,000.

He’s set to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on Sept. 23.
