July 29, 1938 – January 15, 2026
We are heartbroken to share the news of John Mirek Jonas’s passing at the age of 87. He left us peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
John was born on July 29, 1938, in Perdubice, Czechoslovakia to Voito and Frances (nee Bohackova) Jonas. He moved to Canada in 1951. In February of 1969, he married Margaret June Poster. Together they created a beautiful life and family for nearly four decades until her death in 2007. John dedicated his career first as a Salesman for Westinghouse and later worked as a Welder at Powell Equipment, the local Caterpillar Dealer until he retired.
A true lover of nature, John found joy in hunting and fishing. His fondness for animals showed as he would often feed and pamper any creature that came into his yard. He also cherished working on his hobby farm where he plowed fields and grew crops. Family meant everything to him; time spent together was what brought him the most happiness. We will all miss John dearly but take comfort knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife.
John is survived by his children Mike Dill, Heather (Don) Huntley, and Jason Jonas (Lisa); grandchildren Hailey, Lisa, Nick, Kate, Tianna and Corissa; five great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family members.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret and his parents Voito and Frances Jonas.
A Celebration of John’s Life will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026. There will be a Come and Go Reception along with Viewing from 12:00pm until 2:00pm at the WESTFORT CHAPEL located at 420 West Gore Street at James. Following this gathering there will be an interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens where John will rest beside Margaret.
If friends wish to make a donation in John’s memory, contributions to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
