What to know

After a massive snowfall of nearly 60 centimetres hit parts of the Greater Toronto Area on Jan. 26, residents faced challenges as they tried to get to work and dig out their homes from nearly two feet of snow.
Tik Tok users captured the chaos and humor of the situation, posting videos of people shoveling, struggling to walk through deep snow, and poking fun at the winter mess throughout Toronto and nearby regions.
The snowfall came after a polar vortex swept through southwestern Ontario, leading to many event cancellations and ongoing cleanup efforts across the area.

Following this historic snowfall, folks in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are sharing their experiences online while trying to navigate through almost two feet of new snow.

Environment Canada shared initial estimates for snow accumulation on Monday morning. At that point, Toronto’s City Centre received about 56 centimetres, while Toronto Pearson Airport saw 46 centimetres and Ontario’s Storm Prediction Centre in Downsview recorded 32 centimetres.

A Tik Tok user wrote in her caption “Wish me luck on my trip to work.” Her video featured her housemate attempting to leave their home with snow reaching up to her knees. After falling backward into the deep powder, she told the person filming “yeah, you’re cooked, buddy.”

An additional video from another user showed them wading through snow that was up to their hips with a caption saying “Situation in Toronto right now.”

While some were busy shoveling away, Tik Tok users found ways to lighten the mood with jokes.

One Tik Tok user filmed several people clearing a driveway with the caption “Don’t worry Ridgeway we’re coming,” referencing the well-known Ridgeway Plaza in Mississauga.

An additional post showcased someone attempting to climb up some front steps buried under hip-deep snow. The text on that video read “make sure to check on your Canadian friends today.”

This heavy snowfall followed a polar vortex affecting southwestern Ontario and parts of the United States, which caused temperatures to plummet as low as minus 40 C.

The extreme weather led many events and city services to close or operate at reduced hours over Sunday and Monday.
The city along with its residents worked hard on cleaning up afterward.
