This winter’s heavy snowfall in Ontario has led to a rise in complaints in Brampton regarding the windrows left behind after city streets are cleared.
Windrows, which are the snow piles formed in front of homes when plows push snow aside, have become an annual headache for many residents. They block driveways, making it difficult for cars to enter or exit, and quickly become hard to shovel.
This year, Mississauga has begun removing windrows and has received positive feedback from its residents after years of concerns. Other cities like Toronto, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill have similar programs in place.
Despite ongoing complaints over the years, Brampton has not adopted a windrow removal program primarily due to the costs associated with operating specialized trucks.
Brampton is looking into this option; however, implementing such a program would cost around $92 per household for about 150,000 homes. This includes:
About $54 per household for windrow snow clearing, and About $38 per household for enhanced snow removal to ensure safe sightlines on boulevards and travel lanes while preventing snow accumulation in road centers.
An online petition has been started to encourage Brampton city councillors to support the windrow removal initiative.

The newly launched petition currently boasts 119 signatures.
