A permanent spot to honor the bravery, sacrifice, and service of Whitby firefighters who lost their lives on duty is set to be unveiled in Civic Park this fall. This initiative has been made possible by $135,000 in federal funding for the creation of a Fallen Firefighter Memorial.

The memorial will pay tribute to the seven Whitby firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and will stand as a lasting recognition of those who risk their lives daily to keep the community safe. It will also celebrate the 175th anniversary of Whitby Fire and Emergency Services, linking past sacrifices with current services.

“Whitby’s firefighters take on incredible risks for our community, and this memorial will be a lasting tribute to those who gave everything,” said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy. She expressed gratitude towards Ottawa for supporting the funding that allows for a “dedicated place” at Whitby Civic Park where families, colleagues, and residents can remember the service of those fallen firefighters.

The memorial will feature a bronze sculpture depicting a kneeling firefighter at the center of a circular plaza. Designed as an area for remembrance and education, it aims to provide families, colleagues, and residents with a meaningful space to reflect and learn about the history and legacy of Whitby Fire.

“Our fallen firefighters deserve a place that honors them with dignity,” stated Whitby MP Ryan Turnbull.

By placing the memorial at Civic Park near Town Hall, Whitby is ensuring that this narrative of service and sacrifice remains visible, accessible, and integral to the community’s identity, according to Roy.

The names of the seven fallen firefighters will be engraved within the design of the memorial alongside a reflective plaza meant for contemplation.

Whitby's Fallen Firefighters' Memorial

Whitby Fire Chief Michael Hickey expressed appreciation towards the government for “helping bring Whitby’s Fallen Firefighter Memorial into existence.”

“This funding will contribute to establishing a lasting space of remembrance that honors our firefighters’ bravery and dedication in protecting our community.”

Hickey’s thoughts were echoed by Josh Girard, Vice President of the Whitby Professional Firefighters’ Association.

“This support means so much to our members and families as we honor our fallen heroes and ensure their sacrifices are remembered.”

The memorial is being funded through contributions from various sources including the federal government, Whiby Professional Firefighters’ Association, Town of Whitby, as well as private donations.

The unveiling is anticipated in October after construction concludes.
