Northeastern Public Health announced on Friday, April 4 about two confirmed cases of measles in the District of Timiskaming. Those diagnosed with measles are currently isolated and are adhering to public health guidelines, as stated in a press release from Northeastern Public Health. The exposure on the Ontario Northland bus was identified during the investigation of one of these confirmed cases.
The RCDHU noted that measles is extremely contagious and can lead to serious complications. A person infected with measles can spread the virus four days before and four days after their rash appears. According to the health unit’s release, the virus can remain airborne for up to two hours even after an infected person has left the area. It spreads through air when an infected individual breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Initial symptoms include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, and red or watery eyes. Some individuals may also develop small spots inside their mouth. Typically, a rash will appear within two to three days starting at the face before extending across the body.
