A deadly four-vehicle accident early Friday resulted in the deaths of two individuals and led to the closure of Highway 7 between Perth and Maberly, as reported by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The highway was reopened by Friday afternoon.
According to a news release from OPP, emergency services arrived at the crash site near Maberly shortly after 3 a. m.
Police informed CBC that a 59-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man from Ottawa, who were inside an SUV, died at the scene.
In addition, four other people sustained injuries, with two suffering critical injuries and being taken to the hospital. The remaining individuals had minor injuries.
The collision involved two transport trucks and a pickup truck, according to OPP. Fortunately, none of those injured were children.
While authorities are continuing their investigation, they noted that the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions.
“It appears that the westbound [pickup] truck may have initially had a collision with the eastbound transport truck,” OPP Const. Corey Noonan told CBC.
Collision reconstruction specialists were on-site working to determine what led to the crash, he said.
