Ontario government prefers these centres to drug injection sites, citing needle issues in neighborhoods

The HART hub on Queenston Street in St. Catharines is now officially open.

Today, the Ontario government announced that this Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment centre replaces drug injection sites and aims to assist individuals facing homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use issues.

Gateway Residential and Community Support Services is at the forefront of this initiative, offering addiction services, primary healthcare, peer support, food assistance, clothing, and supportive housing.

The government emphasizes that while HART hubs prioritize treatment and recovery, they do not provide supervised drug injection or needle exchange services to maintain community safety.

Additionally, HART hubs are set to introduce nearly 900 supportive housing units across the province.

This is part of a larger $550-million investment for 28 centers throughout the province that will deliver primary care, mental health services, addiction treatment, and employment assistance.
