The nuclear upgrade at the Darlington power plant is now finished, and the unit will soon be back in operation.
Energy Minister Stephen Lecce announced on Monday that the refurbishment was completed four months ahead of schedule and $150 million under budget.
The total budget for the refurbishment was $12.8 billion.
This project involved all four nuclear reactor units at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, extending its operational life until at least 2055.
Premier Doug Ford’s government is heavily investing in nuclear energy to keep up with the province’s increasing electricity demands, including plans for four small modular reactors at Darlington.
The province is also looking into a new large-scale plant at Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ont., considering a new nuclear facility near Port Hope, Ont., and refurbishing units at the Pickering nuclear plant to prolong its lifespan.
