‘Sometimes juries do not get to complete their jobs for complicated legal reasons,’ judge says before dismissing panel

Both sides returned to court on Wednesday to establish new dates after a mistrial was announced concerning a stabbing incident in Wasaga Beach from 2022.

Sherese Edwards was charged with aggravated assault after a woman sustained multiple stab wounds in the parking lot of a well-known bar in Wasaga Beach on Oct. 22, 2022.

The new trial is set for July 28 and will be conducted before a jury. It is anticipated to last one week, which is half the duration of the previous attempt.

Superior Court Justice Annette Casullo declared a mistrial on Monday and excused the jury after most of the evidence had been presented.

“Sometimes juries do not get to complete their jobs for complicated legal reasons,” Casullo told them before she dismissed the panel.

The jury had been selected nearly a month earlier, but the trial quickly became mired in legal disputes and other issues, hearing evidence only for a small portion of that time.

Both the complainant and Edwards had taken the stand, and Crown attorney Lee Sela was wrapping up her cross-examination of Edwards when the mistrial was called.

Edwards’ defense attorney Jason Dos Santos successfully argued for a mistrial, after which Sela promptly stated she would pursue another trial.
