Three people from Windsor have been fined a total of $600 due to fishing violations:
The first person admitted to catching too many baitfish and using a dip net to catch yellow perch and brook silverside. He was fined $300 and is banned from holding an Ontario fishing licence and participating in any fishing activities in the province for six years.
The second and third individuals also pleaded guilty for illegally possessing fish. They were each fined $150 and are similarly prohibited from having an Ontario fishing licence and engaging in any fishing activities in the province for six years.
Additionally, the illegally caught fish, dip net, and fishing gear were seized and handed over to the Crown.
The Ontario Court of Justice learned that on April 14, 2025, a conservation officer received a report from the public about people illegally catching fish with a dip net along the Detroit River shoreline in Windsor.
During an investigation, the conservation officer found three individuals with 6,198 emerald shiners, 58 yellow perch, and six brook silversides caught using a dip net.
According to Ontario Fishing Regulations, an angler with a valid fishing licence is allowed to catch 120 emerald shiners-considered baitfish-with a dip net. However, yellow perch and brook silverside are not classified as baitfish, so they can’t be captured using a dip net.
Justice of the Peace David J. Auger presided over this case at the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on December 1, 2025.
