Measles symptoms usually show up seven to 21 days after exposure and can include high fever, runny nose and cough, red, watery eyes, along with a distinct rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Postmedia file jpg, WK, apsmc

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) has announced that there was a measles exposure linked to an Ontario Northland bus traveling through Renfrew County on March 29. The bus made several rest stops in the county.

Northeastern Public Health reported on Friday, April 4 about two confirmed cases of measles in the District of Timiskaming. Those diagnosed with measles are currently isolated and adhering to public health protocols, according to a press release from Northeastern Public Health. The exposure on the Ontario Northland bus was identified during the investigation of one of these confirmed cases.

The RCDHU emphasized that measles is extremely contagious and can result in severe complications. A person with measles can spread it four days before and four days after their rash appears. The virus can survive in the air for up to two hours even after the infected person has left, as stated by the health unit in their release. It spreads through airborne droplets when an infected individual breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Initial symptoms often include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughs, and red or sore watery eyes. Some may also notice small spots inside their mouths. Typically within two to three days after these initial symptoms appear, a rash will develop starting from the face before moving across the body.

The exposure sites in Renfrew County and District are as follows:

Veteran’s Park, Cobden – 11:30 a. m. to 2 p. m.
Ontario Northlands Bus from Veteran’s Park in Cobden (scheduled departure at noon) heading to bus terminal in North Bay (scheduled arrival at 3:15 p. m.)
Pronto at 3520 Petawawa Boulevard (Scheduled arrival at 1 p. m.; scheduled departure at 1:15 p. m.)

The RCDHU advised any residents of Renfrew County who think they might have been exposed at these locations during those times should keep an eye out for measles symptoms until April 19.

In their press release, the health unit mentioned that if you’ve been exposed and start showing symptoms, you should stay home and avoid going to work or school. Make sure to call your healthcare provider beforehand so they can take extra precautions.

If residents believe they’ve been exposed to measles should verify their immunization status according to RCDHU guidelines. Anyone born in or after 1970 who hasn’t received two doses of the measles vaccine should contact RCDHU at 613-732-3629 extension 0 or toll-free at 1-800-267-1097 extension 0.
