Northeastern Public Health reported on Friday, April 4 about two confirmed cases of measles in the District of Timiskaming. Those diagnosed with measles are currently isolated and adhering to public health protocols, according to a press release from Northeastern Public Health. The exposure on the Ontario Northland bus was identified during the investigation of one of these confirmed cases.
The RCDHU emphasized that measles is extremely contagious and can result in severe complications. A person with measles can spread it four days before and four days after their rash appears. The virus can survive in the air for up to two hours even after the infected person has left, as stated by the health unit in their release. It spreads through airborne droplets when an infected individual breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Initial symptoms often include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughs, and red or sore watery eyes. Some may also notice small spots inside their mouths. Typically within two to three days after these initial symptoms appear, a rash will develop starting from the face before moving across the body.
