The truck driver whose vehicle lost a tire has been charged with operating an unsafe vehicle and having a detached part.

ST. CATHARINES, ON – The Niagara Ontario Provincial Police are looking into a deadly car accident on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) near St. Catharines, where a wheel came off a pickup truck and hit two other vehicles, resulting in one man’s death.

This incident occurred on September 23, just east of Niagara Street.

According to investigators, a wheel from a truck traveling in the Fort Erie-bound lanes detached and crossed over into oncoming traffic. It collided with two vehicles, causing the death of a 53-year-old driver at the scene. A 52-year-old passenger in that same vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.

Authorities report that the driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old man from Niagara Falls, N. Y., wasn’t injured. He is facing charges for operating an unsafe vehicle and having a detached part.

A section of the QEW was closed for four hours while police conducted their investigation into the crash.
