A former elementary school teacher from Hamilton and Burlington has been sentenced to 65 months in prison after being found guilty of sexual offenses against her students.

Barbara Joan Baxter, who is now 88 years old, was convicted of sexually assaulting five male students at Pineland Public School in Burlington during the 1980s. She had previously taught in Hamilton throughout the 1960s.

Details about where she will serve her time have not been disclosed.

Although she was found guilty in February of 2025, various factors contributed to a delay in her sentencing.

The case began to unfold in 2022 when the first victim reported to police that he had been sexually assaulted by a teacher while he was a Grade 8 student during the 1982-83 school year.

Another victim came forward a year later.

Eventually, three additional individuals reported similar assaults to the police.

The first victim shared that his early complaints against Baxter were not taken seriously. It wasn’t until he became an adult that he confronted the trauma and felt compelled to report it.

In court, victims recounted that Baxter would touch them and rub up against them, leading to instances of her performing oral sex on them in a backroom of her classroom. One former student stated he was assaulted at Baxter’s home.

A number of civil lawsuits involving Baxter and Halton District School Board are still pending in court.
