A location previously occupied by Hudson’s Bay at a high-end GTA mall is being transformed into a massive grocery store featuring a playground, party rooms, and gaming areas.

Nations Experience will take over 120,000 sq-ft in the west side of Oakville Place, with renovations starting late next year and an anticipated opening in 2027.

The initiative aims to expand the popular Nations Fresh Food grocery chain, which has integrated entertainment elements at two locations in Toronto. Nations also operates grocery stores in Mississauga and Brampton.

At Oakville Place, Nations Experience will span two floors and be the flagship site for their “foodertainment” concept. It will serve as a key anchor tenant for the Rio Can-owned mall that first opened its doors in 1981. The indoor mall has witnessed the departure of retailers like Hudson’s Bay and Sears in recent years.

Renowned for its wide variety of food products catering to the diverse communities within the Greater Toronto Area, this move into entertainment comes as the brand seeks to diversify its business model.

This concept builds upon a successful pilot project launched eight years ago at Rio Can’s Stockyards Village in Toronto, which included a smaller children’s play area named “Happy Kingdom.”

This vision expanded earlier this year into an all-encompassing concept called “Forever Young” at Centrepoint Mall in Toronto-an entertainment center designed to engage kids, teens, parents, and grandparents with virtual reality experiences, arcade games, sports activities, and party rooms.

As for Oakville Place, situated centrally at Trafalgar Road and QEW in Oakville, the aim is to transform it into a community hub that attracts shoppers as well as those looking for enjoyment.

“This is much more than retail. It’s a destination designed for families who want to shop, play, dine, and connect all under one roof,” said Frank Ho, Vice President of Real Estate Development for Nations Fresh Foods.
