John Douglas Cyr was born in Westville, Nova Scotia on March 10, 1934 to the late John and Augustena (“Tena”) Cyr. He passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025 in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow.
Doug served in the Canadian Air Force for five years, an experience that built his strength and discipline. After completing his service, Doug excelled as a car salesman and later managed the Heather Hotel, where his friendly nature and steady leadership made a lasting impact on many. He then moved on to Michelin, where he worked as a stationary engineer for over 20 years before retiring in 1995.
Dougie loved finding a good deal. In retirement, he spent his time going through the Canadian Tire flyer and buying anything that was on sale – even if it meant having two of them. He believed there would always be someone who could use it.
Doug was very engaged with what was happening around him. He followed global news closely and never hesitated to jump into a lively political debate. Whether discussing current events or sharing ideas with friends and family, he approached every conversation with enthusiasm and insight – whether they wanted it or not.
Doug found joy in life’s simple moments. He cherished his time at his camp in Caledonia where he was always working on improvements. Whether fishing, hunting, or simply relaxing by the water, he felt happiest outdoors in the sunshine surrounded by nature. Doug is survived by his wife Marilyn; his sons Dougie (Kim) and Josh (Lacey); his sisters Mildred Power, Karen Cormier (Harvey), Sheila Mac Laren; brother Ralph; grandchildren Jeff, Julie, Daniel, Devin (Sheehan), Colin, Gena (Cyr), Taylor, Gavin, and Charlotte (Cyr); along with four great-grandchildren. He held each of them dear to him. His special bond with granddaughter Taylor brought him immense happiness during his later years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by daughter Linda Sheehan (Keith Mac Donald); brother Richard Cyr (Bernice); sister Catherine Hendsbee (Aullie); infant sister Nancy Cyr; brother-in-law William Power; and sister-in-law Molly Cyr.
Doug will be remembered for his fish chowder recipe, generous spirit and the love he had for his family. The family will receive visitors from 7-9 P. M. Friday December 12, 2025 at Eagles Funeral Home in Westville. Graveside burial will take place in the spring.
