TORONTO – Five individuals have been taken into custody regarding a home invasion that occurred in Vaughan, Ont., back in August, resulting in the death of a father. Among those arrested is a man facing first-degree murder charges, police announced on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old boy is also being sought for multiple offenses, including first-degree murder, as stated by York regional police during a press briefing.

Abdul Aleem Farooqi was shot and killed after at least three male intruders broke into his family’s residence around 1 a. m. on August 31, according to police reports. The suspects are said to have stolen cellphones purely for “monetary gain only” before the shooting took place, investigators indicated.

Farooqi’s brother mentioned that the 46-year-old lost his life while trying to defend his family from the attackers.

A 26-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont., is now facing charges including first-degree murder and armed robbery, Inspector Paolo Fiore revealed on Wednesday.

A 34-year-old man from Toronto has been charged with being an accessory after the fact in relation to the robbery. Additionally, three others-including two teenagers aged 16-have been arrested for allegedly driving the stolen vehicle used during the home invasion.

“It’s time to contact a lawyer and turn yourself in,” Fiore urged regarding the youth wanted for first-degree murder.

Authorities noted that the 26-year-old charged with murder was already out on four different forms of release when he was apprehended; another adult suspect was also on release at that time.

York Regional Police Chief Jim Mac Sween commented that this incident “once again highlights how police chiefs across the country, myself included, remain adamant that changes need to be made to the (justice) system.”

The investigation remains active, and police believe there may be additional suspects involved.

This report by The Canadian Press was first Nov. 12, 2025.
