Thunder Bay’s Kurtis Byrd was knocked out of the tournament on Friday, losing his third match in the triple-knockout men’s competition in North Bay.

NORTH BAY – Thunder Bay’s Robyn Despins faced her first defeat at the Northern Ontario women’s curling championship.

Despins, who was ahead 4-3 after seven ends on Friday, gave up three points in the eighth and allowed a steal of one in the tenth, ultimately falling 7-4 to Abby Deschene. This puts her record at 2-1 during this week-long event held at the North Bay Granite Club.

With this win, Deschene improved her record to 2-2.

Despins, along with lead Rebecca Carr, second Samantha Morris, and third Nicole Westlund-Stewart will aim to bounce back on Friday night against Sudbury’s Krysta Burns (2-0).

In another morning game involving a Thunder Bay team in the men’s triple-knockout competition, Kurtis Byrd was eliminated after losing 7-4 to North Bay’s Jeffrey Brown in C-side play. This marks his third loss of the week and ends his quest for a provincial men’s title this year.

Brown is set to face Thunder Bay’s Tyler Stewart on Friday afternoon.

In other C-side action, Mike Anderson put an end to Chris Glibota’s title hopes with an 8-2 victory. Next up for Anderson is Little Current’s Jordan Chandler as both teams fight against elimination.

Chandler lost 9-7 to Riley Winters in a B-side match earlier on Friday.

Thunder Bay’s Krista Scharf will try for her fourth consecutive win when she takes on North Bay’s Joanne Forget on Friday night. Forget recently secured her first victory in four games by edging Bella Croisier 7-6 in an extra end.

Another Thunder Bay skip, Trevor Bonot, is scheduled to compete against defending champion John Epping in the A-side final for a chance to advance to Sunday’s championship men’s final.
