Environment Canada issued a yellow alert Friday morning for Niagara and Haldimand-Norfolk, warning of strong winds throughout the region, including Hamilton, Brantford, and Burlington.

Yellow is the first of three color-coded alerts that the weather agency can issue. The alert colors range from yellow to orange to red as the level of risk increases.

In the early hours of Friday, Environment Canada released the yellow alert for communities along Lake Erie’s shoreline. The agency noted that wind gusts could reach 90 km/h and possibly exceed 100 km/h in some areas starting this morning, with conditions expected to “ease late this afternoon or early this evening.”

The agency also mentioned that “showers and the risk of thunderstorms will push into the region this morning,” followed by a cold front expected to sweep through later in the day. In Niagara, this cold front may bring “another wave of strong winds with gusts up to 90 km/h and potentially in excess of 100 km/h for areas along the Lake Erie shore.”

The forecast warned that there might be damage to “roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Some property damage is possible. There is a risk of injury due to flying or falling debris.”

A special weather statement has been issued for Hamilton, Brantford, and Burlington affecting much of southern Ontario. It warns about thunderstorms in the morning along with wind gusts reaching near 70 to 80 km/h.
