Jeanne “Joan” Marie Hill
Joan Hill, nee Mc Cartney, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 surrounded by her loving family and the caring nursing staff at Fairview Manor in Almonte, Ontario on Friday, October 10, 2025.
A devoted mother to Kenneth (Sandra) in Calgary, Alberta and Stephen (Julie) in Carleton Place, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband William Hill. Joan was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire Scotland on April 26, 1936. She moved to Canada with her husband Bill in 1966 along with their two young sons to begin a new chapter. They built a wonderful life here starting in Toronto where Bill worked with the Toronto Metro Police upon arrival. Later they lived in Marathon, Markham, Stouffville, Espanola, Birch Island, Willisville, Elliot Lake and eventually settled down in Carleton Place, Ontario. Joan earned her hairdressing license back in Scotland and continued working as a stylist here while also taking on various retail jobs throughout her career. However, the job she loved most was caring for her family. They embraced life in Canada but always took pride in their Scottish roots and referred to it as “Back Home.”
Joan had a passion for knitting and made countless blankets, cardigans, jumper sweaters, baby sets, mittens and tiny hats for premature babies. Whenever she heard someone was expecting a baby; she would eagerly start creating a little traditional “set” of booties, sweater and hat. Those who received any of Joan’s creations have always cherished them deeply. Until her later months she could often be found engrossed in a novel. She had a gentle spirit with a warm smile who appreciated life’s simple pleasures like spending time at the beach or playing cards and bingo while enjoying good conversations with friends and family. During holidays she liked having a traditional rum and coke while playfully saying “Not too strong or I’ll be singing myself home!”
The family wants to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Roger Drake along with the amazing nursing team and recreational team at Fairview Manor as well as her hairdresser and all the staff who cared for Joan during her three years there.
We will miss her greatly but find comfort knowing that after losing our dad in 2012; she is now reunited with him once again.
Fly High Mum and enjoy the view!
You will always hold a special place in our hearts!
In line with Joan’s wishes; there will be no service.
