The MPP for Oakville North-Burlington serves the northern part of Burlington. This riding is located between the Queen Elizabeth Way and Upper Middle Road, north of Walkers Line and Guelph Line.

With a population of about 149,000, it shares borders with Milton, Mississauga-Erin Mills, Oakville, and Burlington.

Oakville North-Burlington is relatively new, having been established in 2015. Effie Triantafilopoulos from the Progressive Conservatives has been its only representative since then. She was first elected in 2018 and won re-election in 2022 with 47.2 percent of the vote.

Triantafilopoulos is up against Ali Hosny from the Greens, Kaniz Mouli from the Liberals, and Caleb Smolenaars from the Ontario New Democrats this time around.

CBC Hamilton reached out to major party candidates or their representatives for input through a survey. Their responses have been edited for clarity and brevity as shown below.

Also running is Charles Wroblewski with the New Blue Party.

Ali Hosny, Green

Hosny, who is 59 years old, works as a business and management consultant. He identifies health care, cost of living issues, and government oversight as key concerns for residents in the area.

“I am not a career politician – I am a member of the community who has worked, paid my taxes, been on the ground seeing how real life works, and I learned that leadership should serve the people, not political insiders,” he said.

If elected, Hosny aims to promote transparency in budgeting and set up a “stronger independent review process” for policies.

Kaniz Mouli, Liberal

Mouli did not provide answers to CBC’s questionnaire before publication. Previously she ran for this MPP position in 2022 and currently holds a senior manager role in change management enablement at Royal Bank of Canada.

Caleb Smolenaars, NDP

Smolenaars is a 20-year-old student studying labour studies at Mc Master University while also working with CUPE Local 3906. They interned for MPPs Sol Mamakwa and Kristyn Wong-Tam previously.

At just 15 years old, Smolenaars protested outside Triantafilopoulos’s office when they were unable to meet her due to what they described as being met with a locked door despite an arranged appointment by Students Say No. At that time Triantafilopoulos mentioned that things were mischaracterized.

“I didn’t decide to go into politics,” they said in CBC’s survey. “The world where I was raised is inherently political. Every action we take in a capitalist society is political. Unless you’re a member of the privileged ultra-rich, politics will always impact you.”

Smolenaars identifies as both a community organizer and union worker with experience across various causes such as labour rights along with climate justice efforts. They expressed their intention to “fight for the working class.”

Effie Triantafilopoulos , PC

Triantafilopoulos did not respond to CBC’s questionnaire before publication either. She made history as the first MPP representing this riding back in 2018 , securing re-election again last year. In addition , she previously ran unsuccessfully within Mississauga-Lakeshore , which was formerly called Mississauga South back during elections held back in twenty fourteen.

In November , she promised over $6 million aimed “to boost local manufacturing” along creating new jobs throughout her constituency.

Also running

Charles Wroblewski , New Blue Party : A Ph D student focusing on biological engineering , he also comes from Polish immigrant parents based on his profile regarding constituents.
