This weekend brings a lot of festive events to the Waterloo region as December rolls on.

Alice in Wonderland will be performed at the Guelph Little Theatre with both afternoon and evening shows happening.

On Sunday, Ian Graham and Friends will present a night filled with Christmas music at All Saints Anglican Church in Waterloo. Doors open at 7 p. m., and while admission is free, donations for The Food Bank of Waterloo Region will be welcomed.

The Shipyard Kitchener Party takes place at Wesley United Church in Cambridge on Saturday at 7:30 p. m., featuring folk music, storytelling, and comedy performances.

Joy In The City Seven, A Gospel Christmas Celebration is scheduled for Saturday at Parkview Church in Guelph. This event will showcase artists like R& B performer Jill Zadeh, gospel singer Londa Larmond, saxophonist Jim Duffiled, and gospel songwriter Kerroy Williams. The evening will also include inspiring stories of hope and joy.

If you feel like catching a movie, Looper will be screening at Princess Cinemas in Waterloo on Saturday afternoon as part of the Joel Rubinoff Film Festival. There’ll be a discussion with Scott Hamilton from the United Way (who is also a city councillor for Cambridge), with some proceeds benefiting the United Way.

This Sunday features two Christmas Bird Counts-one in Guelph that includes a special count for kids and another one in Cambridge.

Volunteers are tasked with counting all the birds they see within a 24-kilometre radius. For more information, folks can reach out to the organizers via Ontario Nature’s website. If you miss these counts, mark your calendar for the Kitchener Christmas Bird Count on December 20.

The Waterloo County Carollers will perform a free concert at The Gaslight District in Cambridge this Friday evening from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. On Saturday afternoon, How The Grinch Stole Christmas will be shown for free on an outdoor screen starting at 1 p. m., complete with opportunities to meet The Grinch and Cindy Lou Who!

In local hockey news, the Kitchener Rangers are away this weekend.

The Guelph Storm will face off against the Sarnia Sting Friday night at Sleeman Centre before heading to Sarnia again on Sunday afternoon for another match against them.

Menorah Lighting

Sunday 5:30 p. m.

Uptown Waterloo

Join Rohr Chabad Centre for Jewish Life as they light the menorah on Hanukkah’s first night. Enjoy skating on the outdoor rink; volunteers may have donuts or other goodies available as everyone celebrates lighting the first candle together.

If you can’t attend Sunday’s gathering, other menorah lighting events are scheduled for Monday in Cambridge, Thursday in Stratford, and next weekend in Kitchener.

Bonus Guelph Event: Funnukah Fair

Sunday at 4:30 p. m.

Market Square at Guelph’s city hall

Come join Dr. Jeff and Lisa White Chabad of Guelph for an enjoyable evening filled with sweet treats, face painting, lights, hot beverages, “flying latkes,” entertainment, and menorah lighting festivities.

You’ll find indoor activities along with dinner following these outdoor fun events.

Christmas Tyme in Wellesley

Friday 4 p. m. to 8 p. m., Saturday 9 a. m. to 3 p. m.>

This Friday night features a parade along with two live nativity scene performances near the pond and a craft market that continues through Saturday.
