Engine 36 received plenty of assistance in making its way into Whitby’s Fire Station #4 on Tuesday, as the fire department and the town marked the addition of Whitby Fire’s seventh staffed frontline vehicle with a traditional ‘push-in’ ceremony.
The new fire truck will enhance the town’s ability to serve its rapidly growing community, stated Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy.
“Growth requires action. By investing in new equipment, a new fire station, and additional firefighters, we are taking decisive steps to protect our residents and ensure Whitby Fire and Emergency Services is equipped to respond quickly and effectively when seconds matter most.”
Engine 36 will also bolster emergency response efforts, improve public safety, and support the department’s ongoing dedication to readiness and service excellence, she added.
The fire department celebrated this achievement with a traditional push-in ceremony to officially welcome the new truck into service, which is a time-honored practice where firefighters symbolically push a new truck into the station bay, honoring the days of horse-drawn apparatus.
“Engine 36 reflects years of planning to meet Whitby’s growing needs. It boosts our ability to respond today and prepares us for tomorrow. Along with Station 6 and new firefighter roles, it strengthens firefighter safety and service delivery,” noted Whitby Fire and Emergency Services Chief Michael Hickey while expressing gratitude to Roy and the Whitby Council for their support.
“Placing an additional truck into service is an important investment in community and firefighter safety,” added the Whitby Professional Firefighters Association in a statement. “It supports the need for adequate staffing to maintain effective response times and deliver the high level of service that residents of Whitby expect and deserve.”
Until Station #6 opens its doors, Engine 36 will be based out of Station #4 at 734 Dundas Street.
