Dealing with the loss of someone dear is never simple, especially when that person has touched so many lives.

With heavy hearts, we share the news of John Sanko’s passing, who was lovingly called Gigi by many. Surrounded by his loved ones, he departed this life as he lived – profoundly adored by his family, friends, and all those he influenced.

He was a caring and devoted husband to Charlene for 61 years. A supportive father to Ron (Stephanie), Jay (Natalie), and Tanya (Pete) … Gigi truly was the foundation of our family. Of all the roles he took on in life, being a Gigi brought him the most happiness. His greatest joy came from his grandchildren, whom he adored immensely. Whether cheering them on at the rink, sharing stories, or offering guidance, his love and pride for each one were limitless. His memory will stay alive in the hearts of all seven; Luke (Kristin), Jack (Amanda), Brianna (Adam), JJ (Kaitlyn), Vic, Cameron (Ness), and Marc.

John valued his wonderful relationship with his sister Rosalie and brother Jimmy deeply. He was predeceased by his parents James and Mary as well as his brother Ron and sisters Shirley and Patricia.

He always had a soft spot for all the dogs in our families. You could often hear Gigi softly asking one of them, “Who’s your best buddy?”, fully knowing their answer would be “Gigi”. All the dogs will miss you along with the endless table scraps you provided.

John was born and raised in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario before moving to Windsor in 1960 where he earned an Honors Business degree at the University of Windsor. It was here that he met the love of his life and planted roots for over 70 years. His career ranged from working at Hudson Bay Company to owning “Bumper Mart” before finally retiring from WECSSB. He proudly held membership at Beach Grove Golf & CC and will be missed by all his Sunday morning golf pals. Gigi was also a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus.

In Sault Ste Marie is where Gigi’s passion for hockey took flight. He dedicated much time to minor hockey through coaching, working with Hockey Canada or simply enjoying those essential “hot stove” chats in arena lobbies. His unwavering love for hockey and its families left a lasting impression on everyone who crossed paths with him.

Apart from hockey, Gigi embodied kindness, humor, and wisdom – always ready with a story or helpful advice whenever needed. His love for family knew no bounds; his spirit of generosity will remain alive within us all.

Visitation will take place at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home – Banwell Location, 11677 Tecumseh Rd East, Windsor (519-253-7235) on Thursday February 27th, 2025 from 1 pm – 4 pm and again from 6 pm – 9 pm with parish prayers scheduled at 7:30 pm. Family members and friends are invited to gather directly at St Anne’s Parish located at 12233 Tecumseh Rd E., Windsor on Friday February 28th from 10 am until the Funeral Mass starts at 11 am. You can watch a livestream of the mass through this link:

Cremation will follow after the service.

If you wish to honor John’s memory instead of sending flowers, donations can be made to VON Windsor or Golden Rescue-a charity close to our family’s heart. Online condolences are available at www. windsorchapel. com

Rest easy Gigi – your love, wisdom, and spirit will always be remembered.
