Provincial police in Elgin County have charged a man from Southwold who used to work at a St. Thomas elementary school after looking into an alleged incident of sexual luring.

Elgin County OPP announced the charges on Wednesday afternoon, stating that a 59-year-old man is accused of sexual misconduct and has been charged with two counts each of communicating with individuals to obtain sexual services, as well as communicating with someone under 18 years old for the same purpose.

The London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB) confirmed that the man previously worked at one of their elementary schools.

In a letter shared with CBC News, the school board explained that the accused “was in our school through a third party (not as a LDCSB employee).”

Police began their investigation after being called to an address in Southwold Township following reports of an incident. They mentioned there are two victims, both of whom were known to the accused.

Authorities are concerned that there may be other victims they haven’t identified yet, according to police.

The OPP encouraged potential victims to contact officers and local support resources for assistance.

The accused has been held pending bail, but police have not disclosed when his next court appearance will be scheduled.

While investigations are ongoing, the LDCSB urged parents to refrain from speculation “especially on social media.”

They also asked anyone with information to reach out to the OPP and emphasized that “safety is of paramount importance to all of us here at our school and the London District Catholic School Board.”
