A former NDP MP who has been an outspoken advocate for Canadian solidarity and sovereignty will be making some stops in Grey-Bruce.

Charlie Angus will appear in Port Elgin on Sept. 12 and in Owen Sound on Sept. 13 as part of his Resistance tour, encouraging Canadians to get their elbows up in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of annexation.

Angus, who retired from federal politics this spring after more than two decades as MP of Timmins-James Bay, has been crisscrossing Canada in recent months spreading his message of solidarity in the face of Trump’s threats.

The Sept. 12 event at Lakeshore Recreation in Port Elgin is being co-presented by the Bruce Grey Poverty Task Force, the Grey Bruce Health Coalition and the Grey Bruce Labour Council.

Labour Council president Kevin Smith called Angus one of the strongest national and international voices celebrating Canadian solidarity, strength and resilience.

“Canadian sovereignty, the social safety net, human rights, Indigenous rights and labour rights are all under attack,” Smith said in a news release. “Global conflict is accelerating instability, and the residents of Grey, Bruce and Huron counties will not be spared from the negative consequences that this creates.”

The event’s cross-section of co-presenters “puts a face on the negative consequences of attacks on Canada and vast global uncertainty,” the release said.

“Make no mistake this uncertainty along with the Trump regime and their attempts to cripple Canada’s economy through immoral and unethical attacks on our economy through tariffs, for example, will exaggerate the damage already done to public service funding for critical services such as healthcare and make it much worse for those already experiencing poverty and food insecurity and the daily struggle to survive,” the release adds.

The Port Elgin event takes place at Lakeshore Recreation, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

It will begin with an Indigenous opening in which Saugeen First Nation member Rebecca Smith, whose Spirit name is Gentlebreeze, will complete a land acknowledgement and smudging ceremony.

Tickets are $5 and all are welcome to attend. Tickets are available at www.eventbrite.ca/

Angus’s stop in Owen Sound will be at the Harmony Centre, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the event to follow at 7 p.m.

Organizers for that event note that Angus’ cross-Canada tour “highlights the urgent need to resist disinformation, authoritarianism and rising inequality through grassroots action and public dialogue.”

The Owen Sound event is being hosted by Michael McLuhan and will feature guest speaker Trish Meekins.

Tickets are $10 and are available at CharlieAngusOwenSound.eventbrite.ca. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available at [email protected], with organizers noting that no one will be turned away due to cost.

All proceeds from the Owen Sound event will be donated to the Owen Sound Hunger and Relief Effort.
