Firefighters are still on site at a house in Markham for the second day, following a fire that left a nine-year-old boy in critical condition.
Emergency services arrived at the home on Spragg Circle near Ninth Line and 16th Avenue shortly after noon on Friday. The boy was discovered inside and transported to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries. There was no immediate update on his status by Saturday.
Three other individuals who were inside the house during the fire managed to get out safely.
The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) was present on Saturday, continuing their investigation, particularly focusing on the garage area. While they haven’t disclosed what they suspect caused the fire, they do not believe it was criminal.
“We are at the investigation stages to find the origin, cause and circumstances around this incident,” said OFM spokesperson Jim Demetriou. “It’s a stagnant approach, so we will be looking at all the evidence that they have, whether it’s lifting debris, looking at the various debris, and seeing where the origin started.”
Neighbors shared with City News that this family has only recently moved into the home.
“They were relatively new, so we do see them out there playing and everything, we definitely feel for them, we’re just absolutely devastated,” said one neighbor.
“I hope the boy is going to be ok, forget the house, only the boy,” added another.
Fire officials are using this opportunity to remind homeowners to have an escape plan ready in case of a fire and ensure working smoke detectors are installed throughout their homes.
