TORONTO – Five individuals have been detained following a home invasion that occurred in August in Vaughan, Ont., which resulted in the death of a father. Among those arrested is a man charged with first-degree murder, police announced on Wednesday.
A 16-year-old boy is also being sought regarding multiple charges, including first-degree murder, as stated by York regional police during a news conference.
Abdul Aleem Farooqi was shot and killed after at least three male suspects broke into his family’s residence around 1 a. m. on August 31, according to police reports. The suspects allegedly stole cellphones for “monetary gain only” prior to the shooting, investigators noted.
Farooqi’s brother mentioned that the 46-year-old lost his life while attempting to shield his family from the intruders.
A 26-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont., now faces charges including first-degree murder and robbery involving a firearm, Insp. Paolo Fiore reported on Wednesday.
A 34-year-old man from Toronto has been charged as an accessory after the fact in connection with the robbery, while three others – including two teenagers aged 16 – have been taken into custody for allegedly operating the stolen vehicle linked to the home invasion.
“It’s time to contact a lawyer and turn yourself in,” Fiore remarked about the outstanding youth wanted for first-degree murder.
Authorities indicated that the 26-year-old charged with murder was out on four different forms of release when he was apprehended; another adult suspect was also released at that time.
York Regional Police Chief Jim Mac Sween stated that this case “once again highlights how police chiefs across the country, myself included, remain adamant that changes need to be made to the (justice) system.”
The investigation is still underway and police believe there may be additional suspects involved.
