Margaret “Peggy” Stewart (Hughes). January 28, 1927 – July 6, 2025.
The family of Peggy Stewart is heartbroken to share the news of her passing at the age of 98 at the Shiretown Nursing Home in Pictou.
Born in Thorburn, Peggy was the daughter of the late Edward and Isabella (Gibson) Hughes. She trained as a nurse but left before completing her studies after meeting and eventually marrying Robert (Bob) Stewart from Cape Breton, N. S.
Peggy and Bob were both entrepreneurial individuals who raised four children while starting and running several businesses in the Westville area: Stewart’s White Rose/Shell on the Westville Highway and later Peggy’s Lunch, a diner that completed their one-stop concept. People often said it was located just far enough from Cape Breton that you had to stop for fuel and a cup of tea. As Nova Scotia grew and the Trans Canada Highway came through, they opened the Dairy Burger on South Main Street in Westville.
An active community member, Peggy belonged to Saint Paul’s United Church for many years, along with organizations like the Rebekahs, Pythian Sisters, and Westville Heritage Club. She was also a familiar face at local card parties for decades. Peggy loved being creative and was known for her knitting, crochet work, stained glass art, cookies, and pies.
She looked forward to hosting family and friends for her annual Canada Day parade barbecue at home. Her fridge and walls displayed pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored cuddling whenever they visited.
Peggy is survived by daughter Gail Stewart-Rundle of Westville; sons Robert “Bob” (Lynne) of Lower Sackville, Edward “Eddie” (Karen) of Westville, and John (Gwen) of Cole Harbour. She will also be fondly remembered by her nine grandchildren: Sheila, Robbie, Todd, Melinda, Ian, Robert, Erin, Victoria and Kathleen; sixteen great-grandchildren: Sean, Candace, Ethan, Eliza, Nathan, Jared, Reese, Ben, Lauchie , Brady , Isabel , Madeline , Lily , Angus , Piper , Elsie; along with four great-great-grandchildren: Tucker , Easton , Adeline , Benjamin.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents Edward and Isabella Hughes; husband Bob Stewart with whom she spent 29 years; brothers Edward , William , Harry Hughes ; sisters Agnes Mac Lean ; Sally Mason.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Peggy’s long-time neighbors Kathy and Sam Graham for their tremendous help over the years. They also wish to thank the homecare staff who allowed Peggy to stay in her home as long as possible as well as those at Aberdeen Hospital and Shiretown Nursing Home for their compassionate care.
Visitation will take place on Friday July 11th from 2-4 p. m. and from 6-8 p. m. at Eagles Funeral Home located at 1611 N Main St., Westville. The funeral service will be held on Saturday July 12th at 2 p. m., led by Rev. Mary Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Heatherdale Memorial Cemetery.
Please no flowers from family members. Donations in memory of Peggy may be made to either Palliative Care Society or Canadian Cancer Society or another charity you prefer.
You can send online condolences to Eagles Funeral Home.
