Five individuals have been charged in connection with a home invasion in Vaughan that resulted in the death of a father of four last August, according to police reports.

Abdul Aleem Farooqi, 46, was described by his friends as a man dedicated to faith, charity, and community service.

On Wednesday, York Regional Police revealed that Amir Wiam Mohammad Abuhmaid, 26, is facing several charges including first-degree murder and armed robbery.

A 34-year-old man from Toronto has been charged as an accessory after the fact of robbery with a firearm.

A 25-year-old and two 16-year-olds from Toronto are suspected of being involved with a stolen vehicle used during the crime and have been charged with possession of property obtained through crime valued over $5,000.

Authorities also stated that there is one more suspect linked to the homicide who remains at large: a 16-year-old for whom police received judicial approval to disclose their name for five days, as per their release.

“We will find you. It’s time to contact a lawyer and turn yourself in,” Insp. Paolo Fiore said.

York police chief demands bail reform following fatal home invasion

York police are calling for province-wide bail reforms following several violent crimes, including this deadly home invasion.

The teenager was last seen in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and authorities are urging him or anyone hiding him to come forward.

Fiore confirmed that Farooqi was shot inside his home while his family was present but refrained from providing further details, stating that all information will be disclosed during court proceedings.

Political leaders and close friends have previously mentioned he was shot in front of his children.

Naeem Farooqi expressed gratitude toward York police “for their work in identifying and apprehending those responsible for Aleem’s death,” in a statement given to CBC Toronto.

In the early hours of August 31st, officers responded to an emergency call about a home invasion at a residence near Andreeta Drive and Barons Street. They found Farooqi suffering from gunshot wounds; he was declared dead despite attempts at lifesaving measures.

The suspects arrived at the scene driving a Honda CR-V that had been reported stolen from Toronto.

The intruders – one armed with a gun – broke into the house, shot Farooqi, then fled the scene according to law enforcement officials.

The location is believed to have been targeted as part of a robbery; however, investigators are still looking into what motivated this act according to Fiore.
